Definition: A noun is the name of any human, object, place, or action.
Kinds of noun:
1. Abstract Noun.
2. Concrete Noun.
(i) Proper Noun.
(ii) Common Noun.
(iii) Collective Noun.
(iv) Material Noun.
3. Countable Noun.
4. Uncountable Noun.
Functions of a
noun:
As a subject of a verb.
As an object of a verb.
As an object of a preposition.
As a complement of a verb.
As noun or pronoun of apposition.
Examples:
That he has much money is known to
all (As a subject of a verb)
I know that he has done the work (As an object of a verb)
Do not think about what he said (As an object of a preposition)
This is what he said (As a complement of a verb)
The fact that he is a thief is clear to
all (As noun or pronoun of apposition)
Abstract Noun:
Definition: Abstract Noun is that noun which indicates some abstract idea or quality which
has no physical existence and cannot be touched, smelt, heard, or perceived
through the sense; but can only be imagine.
Examples: Youth is our best time. I don’t want his friendship. Every man hates poverty. Childhood is the golden time of a
man’s life.
Concrete Noun:
Definition: A Concrete Noun is the name of something which has external physical existence
and can be perceived through senses, that mean it can be seen, smelt, touch, or
tasted.
Examples: I have a cow. Read the book. Air is important for our life. Gas is essential.
Proper Noun:
Definition: A Proper Noun is the name of a particular person, thing, place, or any other
thing.
Examples:
Name of human: Jerry,
Tom, David, Lina, John.
Name of object: book,
pen, table, bamboo, calculator.
Name of place: Dhaka,
London, India, Khulna.
Name of action: hesitation,
purification, functions.
Common Noun:
Definition: A Common Noun is one which is common to each number of a class of person or
things.
Examples:
Milton (proper noun) is a poet
(common noun).
Rose (proper noun) is a name of flower
(common noun).
The earth (proper noun) is a planet
(common noun).
Shirt (proper noun) is a kind of dress (common noun).
Collective
Noun:
Definition: A Collective Noun is the name of a group or collection of persons
or things of the same kind thought of as one undivided whole.
Examples: A flock of birds is flying. A band of robbers has come here. A team of players goes. The army is formed with discipline.
Material Noun:
Definition: A Material Noun is a name which indicates a matter or substance as a mass and
does not indicate any part or number of it.
Examples: He drinks milk. They want some gold. Iron is an important metal. Water has no colour.
Countable Noun:
Definition: A Countable Noun is the name of anything which can be counted by number.
Examples: Flower, child, book, pen, star, river, cow, girl, etc.
Uncountable Noun:
Definition: An Uncountable Noun is the name of anything which cannot be counted by numbers
and may be measured by some other units only.
Examples: Water, salt, virtue, honesty, air, beauty, rich, milk,
etc.
